10 Tips to Help You Burn the Perfect Candle

Scented candles are a wonderful finishing touch to any room. Not only does candlelight itself create a warm and cozy feeling, but aromas have been linked to regions in the brain related to emotion and memory. This means that by choosing the right candle, we can help ourselves relax or even trigger a rush of memories.

Our Pure Muskoka Soy Candles are each carefully poured by hand, and crafted with quality essential oils to reproduce the scents of Muskoka. It is our hope that our candles remind you of special times spent in the forests of our beloved Muskoka, and judging by all of your comments and reviews, we are doing it!

In order to maximize your candles and enjoy them safely, here are a few tips that can make a world of difference:

1. Place the Candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface. This will help prevent possible heat damage from surfaces and cracking or breaking containers.

2. Avoid drafts, vents, or air currents. This helps prevent rapid or uneven burning and excessive dripping. It also maximizes the scent of your candles.

3. Burn for a minimum of 3 hours on first lighting. This ensures an even burn and prevents “tunnelling”. Before extinguishing, make sure the candle spools entirely across the top.

4. Don’t burn for more than 4 hours at a time. After 4 hours, the candle will get too hot and begin to evaporate fragrance oil and burn down quicker. We recommend 3-4 hour increments.

Pro tip: Let’s be honest, sometimes 4 hours just isn’t long enough. We get it. That's why we recommend keeping multiple candles on-hand so you can rotate through them when you want to continue burning candles longer than 4 hours.

5. Soy wax sometimes creates a “mushrooming” of the wick. This is a normal. Just knock off the the top of the wick before next use.

6. Never leave a burning candle unattended or lit while sleeping. If you are going to leave the room or go to bed, be sure to extinguish all candles first.

7. Keep all candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lit candles where they can be knocked over.

8. Don’t burn candles all the way down. For safety, stop burning a candle when there is ¼ inch of wax left in the vessel. Extinguish if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly.

9. If the candle gets too hot, the wax can completely liquefy. If that happens, the glue holding the wick can release and move across the bottom of the container. Caution: if that happens, the flame can directly touch the glass and crack it. This is why you should stop burning a candle once ¼ inch of wax remains.

10. To extinguish, use a candle snuffer. If you don’t have a candle snuffer, place your index finger in front of the flame and blow gently, this minimizes hot wax from splattering and causes the air to surround the flame when you’re blowing.

One important last thing we wanted to let you know, is that most glass candle jars are rejected from recycling and end up in landfills, due to the remaining wax left at the bottom of the jar. We haven’t yet developed a program to take back your old jars, but we encourage you to please re-use them whenever possible. They are so pretty…and have so many potential uses! A super easy way to clean them is to carefully pour some boiling water into the jar and the wax will become liquified and float to the top. When the water cools, the wax will harden on top of the water making it easy to remove. Throw the jar in the dishwasher and it will be ready to use for just about anything!

Happy burning, friends!
